Biography

Judith Scherer, born in Zurich, Switzerland, diploma from Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich (Art College). Private student of Prof. R. Crummenauer, Art Academy Düsseldorf, Germany. Realization of visual work between drawing/painting, sculpture, photography, performance. With the Bildertheater Bremen, Germany, studies in dance technique and theater. Own performance projects and experiences as a performer. In 1980 moved to New York, studied modern dance at various schools; introduction to classical dance. Development of own performance projects, with an emphasis on the simultaneous creation of movement, visuals, light and sound. In 1989 moved to Prince Edward Island, continued research into classical principles and their potential for contemporary expression and esthetics, realization of interdisciplinary performance projects, incorporating video and new technologies. she received support from the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts and the Canada Council for the Arts. The pieces have been performed in performance spaces and festivals in North America and Europe including: Franklin Furnace, Swiss Institute, New York; Eiszeit, Berlin;Internationale Tanzwoche Dresden; Tanznovember, Zurich; Canada Dance Festival, Ottawa; Sound Symposium, St. John's NF; Atlantic New Dance Festival, Halifax; the most recent project included performances and a video installation, as part of the group exhibition "Beauty Queens", presented by Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, BC, curated by Bruce Johnson (Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador, St. John's, NFLD.), Lisa Baldissera (Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Victoria, BC), and Shauna McCabe (Confederation Center Art Gallery and Museum, Charlottetown, PE).
