Biography

Mary Carr-Chaisson is a visual artist and pinhole photographer.  Mary is best known for her pinhole imagery, taken with a hand-made pinhole camera.  This is a very basic camera that does not have a view-finder, or multi-aperature lens.  The lens is made of a piece of brass, and the aperature is created using a stick pin to drill a hole into the brass.  It takes alot of practise and note-taking, to learn the exposures times required to get a good picture, and to understand the distance from subject required for an interesting shot.  She uses 4"x5" film for her pictures, and processes the film herself, as well as creates the prints in her black and white darkroom.  Often Mary hand-colors her black and white images using Marshall's Oils pencil colors.

Subject matter consists of lighthouses, beaches, old buildings, flowers, and shells.  In most images there is a serene quality, with emphasis on image.  She enjoys evoking a nostalgic feeling in the viewer.
